When one sees a headline like Report: “Nearly $500 billion spent in U.S. on substance abuse, addiction” what thoughts do usually come to mind? That we are doing very well on this front and that we have achieved something during recent times are some of them? Actually, the results in the detailed report speak otherwise.

In 2005 it cost $500 billion to US government for substance abuse, addiction and its consequences. Compared this to Iraq war costs – these numbers are not comparable for various reasons but they do show the order of damage. In 2005 the Iraq war cost was less than $500 billion! So there is a less costly war we hear so much about and then there is a more expensive that goes unnoticed until a headline comes and goes by.

With the elections approaching in America, the entire nation is awaiting breathlessly for the next President, to be announced on November 4th. After the two head-head presidential election debates held, the early polls seem to favor Obama. This year, the candidates have been forced to face the Financial Crisis as a pre-trial of their judgment and aggressiveness before the elections. After all, with the country on the brink of a major financial crisis, the candidates cannot expect a comfortable seat in the white house. In this current situation, one thing that both these candidates have in common is the courage to still fight for candidacy, backed by their patriotism. The legacy that the President is going to be entitled to is compounded by stress, and the fear of the general Public. It is going to be vital for the President to remain composed with the entire nation judging his every move.
