Bush has actually trampled the constitution of the U.S, having run his term based on delusions. His aim at perfectionism has remained just that, a term with the output far from realty. He has to blame himself and more so, his advisers who have been inept at reading the actual crisis that the Americans have been facing. We shall analyze with respect to Obama’s inheritance, the challenges and expectations with respect to the Presidency and his promises to the nation.
Listing the major setbacks of the Bush administration, the treatment around the fiasco of Osama Bin Laden has been a fantasy ride (like the raw-reports stating that he had been shopping at a US base in East Asia and the tracking of all telephone records), the closing of the prison and detaining of prisoners at Guantanamo, the missing 20,000 prisoners, mostly Arab Muslims. Obama will also have to repair the titanic damage involving Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Syria. Here, the primary role of Obama would be to deconstruct, unlearn and re-think to create the strategies regarding “war on terror”. Not to mention the economic crisis that the Americans are facing today, mainly due to the short-term strategies revolving the bad-mortgage crisis. It is for the first time in the History of America that a President has been sworn in such troubled times. The American Economy is critical to the global economy and therefore the troubles at home have a far-reaching repercussion.
Obama will have to put politics aside, focus on the bail-out plan for the economic crisis. His biggest challenges for transition will include promoting a multilateral approach to trade issue amidst the pressures of a “Fortress America” in a scenario of increasing job cuts, closures and bad mortgages. He cannot afford to freeze or remain neutral in these times but must dare to intervene, and in a global way, at that. He needs to reassert faith of the people not just in the democracy but also in the banks, in themselves and their fellowmen.
He has promised a climate of change that shall re-energize America. By providing short term relief in the form of tax cuts, price cuts in fuel and crack down on the speculation regarding excessive energy being spent, there will be immediate benefits. His long- term plans are aiming at creating five million green jobs over the next five years, reduce imports from the middle-east, increased output of electricity from renewable sources, and to promote hybrid cars and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
So, what will keep Obama going?
His courage, his orator skills, strong analytical skills, an understanding of human nature, natural warmth, team-player, a good team of advisers, and all the supporters rooting for him to bring a climate of change in the ongoing economic and energy crisis.
The world has seen that he can win and win in style, in numbers and in opposition. He has won the elections with the support of his family, friends and supporters. He has much more strength now, with America rooting for him and the leaders of the other nations welcoming him to bring about a global framework.
