With people worldwide looking to put their extra money somewhere it will make more money (those who are fortunate enough to have some), the foreign exchange (Forex) market has seemed increasingly attractive. If you are new to this sort of trading, it is worth investing in some software that will help you along the way.

VT Trader 2 from online broker CMS Forex (www.cmsfx.com) might be a good choice.

The company says its software is “an online Forex trading software that lets you look at live quotes and charts of currency pairs for the sake of trading” but it is more than that. It has an intuitive, easy-to-use interface, good for beginner and experienced trader alike, with a wide range of resources for traders who rely on technical analysis as well as for those who are keen on the fundamentals.

The program is quick and simple to install and comes with a lot of support – ...

Car of the Future?

Indian carmaker Tata Motors has just unveiled the cheapest new car in the world.

Worth only $2500 (100,000 rupees) this little gem has been named the „Nano‟ for its small size and was quickly dubbed the "people's car". It was developed so that middle-class Indian families, who currently do not own a car, will be able to afford it – and this has meant a design that follows the “keep it simple” philosophy to the maximum.

The question is whether the little four-door hatch will take not just India but the whole world by storm, as its makers hope. (They hope it will “boost the Indian economy and create entrepreneurial opportunities across India”.)

Tata Motors calls it a “comfortable, safe, all-weather car, high on fuel efficiency and low on emissions”. What they do not mention is that it includes lots of plastic – dashboard and seat covers for starters. There is little luggage space – although it does seat ...

Barter

What do you have to offer? No, not a question about your personality: the question targets your ability to take part in the new economy – bartering. It may just be a media myth, or it may be the next big thing, but accounts bartering being used to make ends meet are beginning to appear in newspapers from the ‘Cape Cod Times’ on 3/22/09 to the prestigious ‘Financial Times’ of London on 3/21/09. And it’s not just limited to individuals, as the first of those reports focuses on ordinary Moms and Dads, while the second names Mercedes-Benz and Vodafone as participants.

Bartering, the exchange of goods or services without cash payment, has been part of the alternative lifestyle scene for decades. It has received official recognition via IRS rulings about what is taxable and what is not (see here). But, in the words of one barter exchange enthusiast, until recently, "We were out beating ...

A New Look at the Mall

Two recent news items may just provide a clue for those who have a little money to invest and are wondering where best to put it for maximum return.

Hot off Reuter’s wires comes the news that, in February, US permits for housing rebounded from record lows, showing a rise for the first time in ten months and “bringing a glimmer of hope for the recession-hit economy”. The second item comes from Time magazine. In an article entitled ‘Recycling the Suburbs’ author Bryan Walsh points out that “the American suburb as we know it is dying.” Thanks to the housing bust, which has hit the suburbs hardest; changing demographics (more empty nesters, fewer households with children); and a growing preference for living close to urban amenities (underpinned by rising oil prices and increased consciousness about the environment), the face of once-thriving suburbs is changing. There is a growing surplus of large-lot homes – and the malls that ...

Weathering the Hurricane

In a recession, cash is king. For those with some cash reserves opportunity can take many forms as desperation spurs vendors to new heights – or should that be “depths”? It seems that to those who have not, more shall be taken away. In some countries at least, the once mighty Citibank is accepting 60 cents on the dollar to clear credit card debt – great news for Citi’s cardholders, not so good for its shareholders perhaps. Or taxpayers funding bank bailouts.

For the canny business person there are other bargains to be had, and it turns out that balancing the municipal books is providing a bonanza for those who follow online auctions, as many US city administrations – and even State governments – scamper to cash up by disposing of all sorts of surplus equipment. Cars are the favourite and staple item: Charleston County SC is reported to be selling up to seven used police ...

Reverse Auctions – a New Way to Buy

During the last few years, a new, fun way of buying things you need (but thought you could never afford) has appeared and grown online. Known simply as ‘Dubli’, (dubli.com) this method of internet marketing is becoming popular with all age groups because of the wide range of quality products that are available, and the ease and speed with which they can be obtained without moving from your computer – and for next to nothing in price. Dubli is popular in Europe (where the concept was launched in 2003) and has been rapidly expanding across the United States since September 2008, following a visit from its founder, Michael Hansen.

This is a one-stop shop for anything from a Gucci bag to a new motor vehicle, and everything between. For example, articles on display for auction as this is being written include an iPod nano chromatic 16 GB 4G; a Sony Ericsson K850i mobile phone; a Juicy Couture ...
