Five months to go for Christmas but till now last year debts are yet to be paid. Then, jobs are few, industries are having tough time, stocks are not doing well either, and no forecast is in my favor. So where is the break that I deserve? Warmer weather and long school vacations are ahead. This is the time when everyone’s thoughts turn to holidays, if not abroad, then definitely closer to home. However, two new threats to your travel plans are creating consternation worldwide. They are, of course, the recession and swine flu. How real are these threats and how long will they last?

Looking at the recession first, leaders in the travel industry are already seeing reduced numbers of people moving around the world.

Giovanni Bisgnani, director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) says: “Like the rest of the economy, recovery in the air transport sector rests on a rise in consumer confidence and consumer spending. Shedding debt will be a major headwind. US households, for example, are leveraged at 130 percent of annual income. Even bringing this down by five percent erases $500 billion in consumer spending. The challenge for governments is to turn stimulus funds into spending that fuels ...

Auctions – Win-Win Way to Sell Real Estate?

Since last year’s subprime mortgage crisis, which many see as the beginning of the American, and global, credit crisis, the word “foreclosure” has been heard with increasing frequency. Simply put, it means there is insufficient money to repay interest on a mortgage, so the bank steps in to sell the property – usually by auction.

Thus the notion of auctioning property has become associated with “foreclosure” in peoples’ minds, and a thing to be feared.

However, many are coming to realize that selling by auction is an effective method to use when they need a property to change hands quickly and efficiently – and quite unrelated to any foreclosure. As one senior Omaha realtor says: “There has been a myth in the past that auctions are for distressed homes or distressed people. They’re not. They are just a different way to market a house.”

A recent study by a Californian consulting firm has shown that combining a stimulus for ...

Real Estate – a Love Affair on Hold

Negative equity in the family home has plunged many American households into an insecure financial situation. The subprime crisis has caused the real value of homes to plummet. Mortgages reflect the old value of properties – not their current, significantly lower, value. Owing more than they own, some home owners have opted for bankruptcy, which has become common; and some realtors are looking at earning only a quarter of what they made last year. Many real estate agents are getting out altogether, re-training and moving to other careers, because the real estate market is effectively paralyzed. Similarly, redundancies are scything the ranks of loan brokers; and the effect of the mortgage meltdown is being felt in those jobs associated with housing: construction, trucking, and so on. The property collapse is one of the factors creating the highest unemployment rate in America since the early seventies, according to figures recently released.

The United States has exported the property ...
